if raccoons are nocturnal, does that mean that if they're out during daylight that they're rabid?

yes and no. See raccoons go out at night because this is when it is easiest for them not to be spotted as they search for a meal.  But the truth is they usually are up in the day and take naps and wander around looking for munchies.  mostly trash cans if they are living in suburbs, cities even by the sea near picnic ares.

I raised one who's mom dropped him off one day in my back yard.  He comes in the evenings about 10 p/m to ask for food.  But he's been here at all hours, a/m, afternoon and yes evenings.  He lives in the woods as I have alot of acreage and plenty of woods.  Does not like being with humans except me and he was raised with my 3 huge pitbulls.  Whom cared for him as he grew up and slept with him til he was able to fend for himself.  I hope this helps.

Racoons are wild animals..........not to be trusted..........they usually come out at night time............but sometimes in the days that not much sun they will come out under trees.  If you see them in broad sunlight, I would be real concerned and would be calling the wildlife number.  If they act funny that could be sick.  Keep any cat food inside at night time, keep a cap on your chimney and keep all trash cans locked up.  When you put the trash out spray inside the bag with ammonia and outside with it also.........Keeps bears & racoons out, they don't like the smell.  If they are going on your porch at night, keep a bright light on and spray the steps and perimeter of your porch & rails with ammonia, repeat if it rains.  They will travel away from your property.
