Fort Worth is a zone 8a area as far as gardening zones go. That will help when picking out options. It sounds like heavenly bamboo would be a good option. It has lovely fall foliage all year round and is drought resistant. American beautyberry and winter jasmine are a few other favorites that sound like they'd do well in your yard.
