Iwas given some iris bulbs in Oct. I live in Hou. Tx., when and where should Iplant them?

This past weekend my brother gave me some irises, he said some of the irises were light lavender and the others were acreamy real full bloom he did not say what kind of iris they are.I live in Houston Tx and iwould like some help to find out when I can plant the irises, and what location in my yard to put theses irises. Can I plant my irises now in Oct. Or when should I plant them what type of soil do they like , what about plant food ? Please help!

Now is the time to plant them in the fall for spring.....they like to be planted shallow 1 to 2 inches in the ground.  They need full sun....don't plant them too close together as they will start to multiply during the winter.  When you dig the soil they like bone meal in the hole that you are going to plant them.  If you have squirrel problems mix some old pepper in the soil.   Keep the weeds down and the will flower next spring.  I have some very old ones from the 1930's and I just transplanted them 5 years ago....almost time to take some out and move some tubers to another spot.  Happy Iris planting
