I got my first bud on my peony plant after being transplanted 5 years ago, but it won't open?

it likely has athids, check plant if not have you fertilized

check to see if the plant is planted too deep, if it is, then it will not bloom, wait till fall, dig it up and plant it just under the soil, not very deep and water well to get it to re-establish itself , if the weather is still really hot and dry,  I have personally done this and my peonies do really well now. i picked up this tip from a garden site as well.  GOOD LUCK

needs a good shovel full of very old horse manure after the plant dies down.  You said that it did come up and bloom....

don't spray for ants in that area.....they need ants to open those buds....they crawl all over them....and do their job.

I also agree that they might be planted to deep.  See if they open this year if not wait for fall and dig up and replant.  They need ants to open the blooms and PH should be 6.0-8.0
