I have had several trees cut down on my property (both recently, and at least 6 years ago) - the sprouts that I have to keep cutting off are driving me crazy!  I heard that if you spray paint the stump the sprouts won't grow - WRONG!  It seems that there are more sprouts than ever!  Please tell me there is something I can do to stop this, and that it is not a lost cause because I didn't do something immediately after the tree was cut.  Due to finances, I am forced to be a "do it yourselfer" so I am looking for an economical, tried and true method other than stump grinding.  PLEASE HELP, and THANK YOU for your time and info!!!

The best way to stop the growth that youare speaking of is: 1/2 Bleach to 1/2 Kerosene, pour the mixture on the affected stumps [and it don't take more than an ounce]; the mixture will kill all the root system within the stump [and by the way, it will kill anything growing in the stump], it will take about a week to a week and a half to see the results. -Birdy

try undeluted white vinegar daily for several days to see if this works for you.  It might kill some grass that is close to it, but the grass will spread again.  Only other way is dig around the tree roots.......and pour vinegar in the hole around the tree.  Can you burn in your area?  .  Maybe a neighbor can help you get this root out with his tractor when the ground is soaked after a storm
