I remove the stalk by cutting at a forty-five degree angle as close to the base of the plant as possible.  You want the plant to put it's energy into the rhizome, not seeds.
I never cut them, I just let them die down.  Put some bone meal around them with gloves on in the fall......they are growing babies all over.......in 2 or 3 years I will have to dig some up and start another bed.  If you are having problems with squirrels put red or black ground pepper with the top covering of dirt.
I snap it off so the plant can use it's energy into preparing the shizome for the next blooming season.
My irises form a seed pods; but don't bloom; what is wrong and how can I fix this?
