Yes, the tree can be trimmed with no problems, make sure that you do the trimming in the winter months, and remember not to remove more than 1/5 of the folliage during trim - until you are satisfied with the result. By the way, it is my experience that he who suggests a plant needs to be removed based upon appearance and over-growth, is seeking to have that job and wanting a very l;arge amount of money to get the job done. Why remove a healthy plant just to line the pockets of he who doesn't know that much better?
