It is possible that this is a result of freeze damages. It is also somewhat common for hard wooded varieties to crack this way.  As they get older they tend to swell and are forced to crack in the hardened outer layers.

My White Pine Tree doesn't look good, the needles are pointed down, the trunk has a split in it, What can I do to save it?
