I planted the giant variety of liriope last summer on the east facing side of my porch.  Some of the plants are thriving while a few a turning yellow and falling away.  Do I need to fertilize them?  I water them about once a week unless there is rain.  Temperature have ranged fom moderate (80's) with a few very cool temps in the 40's and 50's until recently.  Now it is beginning to heat up.  They have mulch around them and appear neither too dry nor too wet.  We have dianthias planted in front of them that are doing quite well but have been late starters. Please help.

Do yellowing leaves of the liroipe plant indicate that it might need fertilizer?  Some of the plants in the same area are doing very well while about 1/3 of them are yellowing and going away.  They seem neither too wet or too dry.

Fertilizer in the form of extra calcium (crushed egg shells) and some energy booster (sugar water: 75/25 mixture).  And by the way, touching the top of the soil does not indicate the amount of water that is at the roots of the plant, you need to pput your finger down at least 6" to see how moist it is there, and that will give you an indication of how well the roots are doing.  Becaause, though it may seem moist on the top layer of the soil, that moister may not have had the opportunity to drain down to the roots of the plants yet, the liroipe plant requires more water in the hotter months than other plants of the same breed. -Birdy
