At times I have stuck the freshly open end of a jade leaf into the ground only to find it rooting later. Is this common and a good way to thicken up your potted jade plant?

Yes you can, the best way is to only bury the stem 1 1/2 inches below the soil and water.

Jade plants grow better than weeds.  You can stick a piece of jade "leaf" minus the stem or a large peice of stem with or without the "leaves "  and it will grow into a bush over time.  Easiest plant I ever saw to propagate.  Good luck.                    wink
