It will survive IF you change the water often enough. I have done it many times in the past but they died after transplanting. I have had great sucess just sticking the avocado seed in a pot of dirt, only half-covered by soil. Keep it where you will see it often and give it a little drink every few days until it splits and sends out a shoot (a couple of weeks or less). Be sure the pot is deep enough to accomodate the roots. Do not water more than once a week after it starts growing. Good luck!
