That sounds more like hornets to be.  Bumble bees are very large.............hornets are smaller..........if you are renting I would ask the landlord to take care of them.  If you are the owner you might need a pro come and help you.

They are definitely bumble bees....they are furry and fat and larger than most bees.  They don't really bother me... we both sort of work around each other...however, my father is allergic and it would probably be him that gets stung...so rather than kill them, I would rather deter them... I am thinking I will have to close up the holes around the door threshold next year when they are gone...or before they begin.  Is there anything that deters them from wanting to nest there?

We should be having a frost soon and then you can get the nest out when it is very cold.  You could have a prop come or you could close the opening under the steps...............they might not like vinegar full strength around that area or ammonia..................Heinz has a new 6% cleaning vinegar that is 1% stronger than regular vinegar..........

The carpenter bee is often mistaken for a bumble bee, go on line and look for a picture.......compare to what you have.  They are also fuzzy and can string.
