what is ideal soil mix for onions

To grow big red onions, how deep does the soil have to be, and how much sand and other amendments should there be in what proportion?

they like neutral ph soil need 4 inches of ph soil with 1" compost o the top of the soil, dig a hole 2nches deep bulb down root end is flat with brown circle cover with soil, water well, keep weeds down.  Onion is ready when the tops die off and fall over in  5 to 7 months.  In 4 to 8 plant early spring, 9 to 13 plant late winter.  Does better using bulbs instead of seeds.
