I think what you are talking about is a sweetgum tree, it might not be poisonious but those spines could injure their mouth & tongue and be very painful and get infected.

It may go by other names but the tree I'm concerned about is called liquidamber here.  It drops mace like balls that under proper conditions grow roots and become small liquidamber trees.  My concern is are these mace like balls poisonous for dogs.  I understand that the spikes can hurt the inside of a dogs mouth and then possibly get infected.  But are they toxic?
While my dogs got sick from the oleander bush (that the prior house owner had planted). I have never seen my dogs eat the mace like sticker balls from my two liquid amber trees.
