What is a plant with long pointed , burgundy leaves.

Our plant is about 5 ft. tall and has long leaves 12 to 15 inches of deep burgundy. The stem is like a brown bamboo stalk.  The color is very rich and dark from being outside all summer.  It fades out to a burgundy green in the winter.  It has three babies this year and we want to know if we can remove them.  If we coukd identify the plant we could find out more about transplanting it aand its babies.

It could a different type of bamboo, and I hate to say this, it can take over your yard.  This is good to hold back a bank along the creek.  My neighbor had someone dump dirt and it had that in it and she is now trying to kill it.
