No need to dig them up, potato's are remarkably hardy.  The reason that the leaves turned black was the freezing of the liquid inside the leaves; the plant will eventually grow new leaves, you should see the sprouting of new leaves in about 2 weeks or so.  -Birdy

I would sit tight........wait...........don't dig them up yet unless you want tiny potatoes.  They call them salt potatoes up in Pa.  Very expensive compared to regular potatoes. It won't hurt them to stay in the ground.  If frost is going to hit again you can cover with a plastic tarp for overnight...........I use clothespins to keep them in place and I have to take it off when the temp goes over 33 and do the same thing the next frost.
