why would the center of my Pampas grass die, but the outer part of the plant is fine?

I have 4 clumps of Pampas grass and the middle of all 4 of them died last winter. Can you tell me why this happened?

Something may have tried to make a nest there.  I don't have the PH for that.  You might want to check on that.  I would carefully trim out the dead stuff.
